St Michael's & All Angels - Middlewich

The following text is the introduction, transcribed from the printed copy which is available from the society.

This book is based on transcriptions carefully taken during 1990, by Peter Chadwick of the South Cheshire Family History Society, of the surviving stones which mainly form a path around the area of Middlewich Parish Church.Use has been made of a "Schedule of Graves" compiled in January 1964 by Bower, Edleston & Son, F/A.R.I.B.A., Chartered Architects, Surveyors, Bank Chambers, Churchyardside, Nantwich, Cheshire. This work is not a transcription of the inscriptions but merely lists dates and names. Some of the information, when compared with the extant gravestone inscriptions, is incorrect but the present work has been enlarged by details, from this list, of stones which no longer exist. This list is to be found at the County Record Office, Duke St. Chester. Use has also been made of a list of transcriptions taken in 1930 on a road-widening scheme when the graves listed were moved. (N.B. This list only gives details of gravestones that were moved and does not include other stones.)This list is to be found at the Public Record Office, London. Ref. No. RG / 37/ 106 & 107 (plan)It would appear that at some time another survey of the gravestones has taken place. This is evidenced by the painted numbers to be seen on many of the stones. These numbers do not relate to either of the above lists. It would be appreciated if any reader with knowledge of this other survey would contact the editor of this work!! Finally the work is completed by the inscriptions of gravestones which appear in the yard of the United Reform Church, Queen Street, Middlewich. These inscriptions were transcribed by Peter Chadwick in 1990. The numbers following each inscription refer to the two lists previously mentioned. Those preceded by S.G are from the Schedule of Graves compiled by Bower and Edleston: those preceded by P.R.O. are from the list in the Public Record Office. In addition, during the summer of 1997, the memorials and dedications including the stained glass windows from the interior of the church were transcribed. Translations of three of these to assist in indexing was carried out by James C. Sutton of Alsager in January 1998 and they appear at the end of Section 5 - before the Index.

This work is in five sections:-

Section 1.Inscriptions from the interior of the church. (Page 6)
Section 2.Inscriptions from the churchyard. (Page 23)
Section 3.Inscriptions from the P.R.O.list which have not survived. (Page 64)
