TOURS AND TALKS
Unfortunately numbers we can accommodate on tours are limited. To give as many people as possible the opportunity to join a tour some places are bookable in advance, and some are bookable only on the day. (For bookings, please telephone (01244) 602559).
- Tour "Behind the scenes at the Record Office". Duration about 40 minutes.
Maximum 15 people for each tour (7 places bookable in advance)
Times: 10.30, 11.30, 2.00, 3.00
- Talk 'To the Rescue' The work of the Conservation Unit, with a display of materials and conserved items from the archive. Duration about 40 minutes.
Maximum 18 people for each talk (9 places bookable in advance)
Times: 11.00, 12.00, 1.45, 2.45
- Guided walk '...The Best of Times...The Worst of Times'. Step into Chester's Victorian Past with Mike Hardman, Education Officer. A walk for beginners of all ages. Duration about 40 minutes.
Maximum 15 people for each walk (7 bookable in advance)
Times: 10.30, 11.30, 12.30

- Reading old handwriting
- Demonstrations of cleaning and repair techniques by the staff of the Conservation Unit and the opportunity to try techniques yourself
- Exhibitions
- Quiz
- Sale of publications and CD-ROMs
- How to use historical sources on microfilm and microfiche - (these include parish registers, local newspapers, census returns)
- How to use historical sources on PC - These include the Cheshire Image Bank, census indexes, maps, Ormerod's History of Cheshire, Soldiers Died in the Great War, and access to the Local Studies Database via the Record Office website.
- In the meeting room
- Family History Advice Desk
- Advice on historical sources held at other offices - Warrington Library and Greater Manchester County Record Office
- Displays and activities with the staff of the Salt Museum and Chester City Culture and Leisure Service
- Displays and leaflets from local history societies and organisations
Record Office staff and volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to talk about the Service.
