Introduction
Peter Chadwick
The following collection of articles from previous editions of the "Cheshire Genealogist", were initially put together by myself, with the intention of publishing a 10th Anniversary Edition of the journal. I felt that this would have been the best way of celebrating the 10th anniversary of the society. It was later decided that a better alternative would be to increase the content and number of pages of the new journal - the "Cheshire Genealogist and Family Historian".
A number of factors had a bearing on which articles were selected for inclusion in the 10th Anniversary edition and which were not, but it would be of no benefit to itemise why one article was included, whilst another was rejected.
There are many articles, which have appeared in the journals during the first ten years, which on the face of it should have been included in this edition if one was trying to show the "best" articles.
However, my overall aim was to give a broad view of "Family History Research" in South Cheshire as
illustrated by contributions to the journal.
There are many articles that would have been worthy of inclusion in this edition, but space was limited. I therefore had to be ruthless in my selections. Any criticisms of the selections can be directed at myself as I chose them.
Nevertheless, I feel that this edition would have been a useful reminder of our progress over the first ten years. The first journals being hand produced on Gestetner duplicators and laboriously put together by a small team of the committee. Initially we produced a 16 page journal and gradually progressed to 40 pages (including the cover).
As from the Winter Journal of 2000, the journals will consist of between 48 and 52 pages (excluding the cover) - a real increase of 12 - 16 pages.
I have been asked to provide a selection of articles from the journals to be placed on our website.
I feel that the best way of doing this is to use the articles from the proposed 10th Anniversary edition first. From time to time these will be added to with articles extracted from the subsequent journals.
I would point out though that some of the articles included illustrations, which have not been reproduced here.
